Your adventure begins at the tour operator's booking hut in Skaftafell National Park, where you’ll meet your guide in time for an 8.15am start. After a safety briefing, get suited up in your crampons and glacial hiking gear, and travel by bus to the starting point of your hike, a 15-minute drive from the hut.

Arrive at the foot of the Falljökull Glacier, a glacier tongue of the famous Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, and set out through the glacier valley. Follow your guide on an exhilarating hike around crevasses and glacier mills, trekking along shimmering fields of ice, and gazing up at dramatic cliffs of ice. There’s no need to worry if you’ve never used crampons or tried ice hiking before – your guide will explain everything you need to know and you’ll soon get the hang of it!

After a 1.5-hour hike, return to the booking hut, and continue in your own vehicle to the Fjallsárlón lagoon, around 40 minutes drive. Then, jump aboard for an unforgettable boat ride around the glacier lagoon, cruising past towering icebergs and gazing out over the icy landscapes of the surrounding glacier.

Please note: This tour is best suited to participants with their own transport - travelers must provide their own transportation from Skaftafell to Fjallsárlón lagoon.
  • Confirmation will be received within 48 hours of booking, subject to availability
  • We recommend that you bring the following items with you on the tour:
  • Waterproof jacket and pants (rental clothing available directly from the operator for a small fee)
  • Hiking boots (available for rent, for a small fee. We strongly advise against running shoes or any type of shoes that come up below the ankle bone as the straps on the crampons can get a bit painful during the walk)
  • Light sweater (preferably wool or fleece)
  • Light synthetic or quick dry pants (try and stay clear of jeans as they get wet and cold quickly and dry slowly)
  • Thin gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Small backpack (can be handy for carrying your camera, packed lunch and extra layers)
  • Sunglasses and sun protection (the reflection of the sun can be quite strong once on the ice)
  • Food and drinks (lunch is not provided, we recommend you bring a packed lunch. There is plenty of fresh water on the glacier so bring a bottle with you to refill)
  • Camera (strongly recommended for you to be able to share your glacier adventure with your loved ones back home)
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 10 travelers
  • OPERATED BY Glacier Guides

The tour was lots of fun. The only problem we encountered was not with the tour but with Viator. They are the middle man for the tour operator and they provided some false information. First everything they claimed was included was not. The tour wanted to charge us for boot and clothing rentals as they found our clothing to be inadequate. Second, the second tour started at 3:00, it didn't end at 3:00. There was a long break between the 2 tours which we would have planned for had we known it and we also would have planned for the fact that it ended 1 1/2 hours later than we anticipated. Apparently the tour operator has encountered this with Viator many times before.
